A French classic for everyone
Pétanque is a social game that originated in the south of France. It is played with metal balls and a small wooden ball called the "jack" (cochonnet).
The goal is simple: throw your balls as close to the jack as possible - closer than your opponent. It is played on a gravel or sand surface right on our premises.
You play solo (1 on 1), in pairs or threes. It is the ideal game for a pleasant afternoon - easy, fun and it draws in even those who have never played.
How pétanque is played
You'll learn it in a few minutes. All you need is a few balls, a bit of gravel and the will to have fun.
Throw the jack
From the circle you throw the small wooden ball (the jack) about 6 to 10 metres away.
Throw the balls
Players take turns trying to throw their metal ball as close to the jack as possible. You stand in the circle, feet together on the ground.
You can knock out your opponent
You can hit your opponent's ball and knock it further from the jack. Or you can simply place yours closer.
Points are counted
Only one team scores - the one whose ball ended up closest to the jack. It gets as many points as it has balls closer than the opponent's best ball. Two balls closer means 2 points, three balls 3 points.
Next round in the opposite direction
You start the new round where the jack ended up - you make a new circle and throw towards the opposite end of the court.
Play to 13
Points from the individual rounds add up. The team that reaches 13 points first wins.
